Summary

A darkly humorous, surprisingly poignant, and utterly gripping debut novel about a guy who works in Hell (literally) and is on the cusp of a big promotion if only he can get one more member of the wealthy Harrison family to sell their soul。

Peyote Trip has a pretty good gig in the deals department on the fifth floor of Hell。 Sure, none of the pens work, the coffee machine has been out of order for a century, and the only drink on offer is Jägermeister, but Pey has a plan—and all he needs is one last member of the Harrison family to sell their soul。

When the Harrisons retreat to the family lake house for the summer, with their daughter Mickey’s precocious new friend, Ruth, in tow, the opportunity Pey has waited a millennium for might finally be in his grasp。 And with the help of his charismatic coworker Calamity, he sets a plan in motion。

But things aren’t always as they seem, on Earth or in Hell。 And as old secrets and new dangers scrape away at the Harrisons’ shiny surface, revealing the darkness beneath, everyone must face the consequences of their choices。

Not the type of book I’d usually read but I really enjoyed it overall, though I found it a bit difficult to stay motivated to read at parts。 That’s more a reflection on me though than the book, it did really hook me in!

This is an absolutely amazing book! So many twists and turns that you will not want to put it down until it is finished! The authors writing is also fantastic!

This book was a real page turner,I couldn’t wait to find out what would happen to the characters。 Unfortunately, it didn’t come together in the end for me。 I literally put it down and thought, I’m not sure I understand that ending。 I went online and found that many other readers were in the same place as me。 So, while I liked the two lead characters who were stuck in hell, and, was caught up in the main characters of the family still alive on earth, na bad ending (in my opinion) just ruined the This book was a real page turner,I couldn’t wait to find out what would happen to the characters。 Unfortunately, it didn’t come together in the end for me。 I literally put it down and thought, I’m not sure I understand that ending。 I went online and found that many other readers were in the same place as me。 So, while I liked the two lead characters who were stuck in hell, and, was caught up in the main characters of the family still alive on earth, na bad ending (in my opinion) just ruined the book。 I cannot recommend。 。。。more

Moral of the story: beware the deal with hell’s representatives and think it through before you “sign here。” 3。5 stars。 Nearly 4, but the villain’s final scene was looong on exposition; an army could have been deployed to capture that person in the time it took for them to explain their motive。 The plot get a little hazy in the end too。 But the fundamental premise is creative and the multiple perspectives keep the reader hooked。 And how can you not root for a character named Peyote Trip? I have mixed feelings on this one。 It’s probably more of a 2。5- or 3-star read, but I wouldn’t recommend it。 The concept is a lot better than the execution。

I went into this book only knowing the tagline that we are following a man who works in actual Hell, a place where the pens don't work; the coffee machine is constantly broken; and the only alcoholic drink available is Jägermeister。 That man is Peyote who has worked his way up to the 5th level of Hell and now is a dealmaker, getting people on Earth to sign away their souls。 Peyote just needs one more soul in a particular family to sign the dotted line, so he can carryout his big plan。That family I went into this book only knowing the tagline that we are following a man who works in actual Hell, a place where the pens don't work; the coffee machine is constantly broken; and the only alcoholic drink available is Jägermeister。 That man is Peyote who has worked his way up to the 5th level of Hell and now is a dealmaker, getting people on Earth to sign away their souls。 Peyote just needs one more soul in a particular family to sign the dotted line, so he can carryout his big plan。That family is the Harrisons, and we follow them, with the focus being on their teenage daughter who has recently made a new friend, which is a rarity in her life。 The family dynamics of the Harrisons are far from ideal, and we learn about what is going on behind the scenes with each of the members。I was entertained by the creativity, humor, and depth of this story, which turned out to be more than what I was expecting。 It was very engaging。 I did find the different storylines and backstories we are given to get a bit jumbled at times, but that felt like a minor issue compared against the overall success of the story。 。。。more

To be honest, I got bored at the beginning。 But then it started getting interesting when it's almost half way to the book。 I kept asking myself how the author will intertwine these characters - hell and living。There were a lot of hints of the plot twist if you take note of the details and somehow I already knew what will happen。I wish the ending was more detailed or explained as I somewhat got lost and confused that I had to reread it so I can fully grasped what happened。 To be honest, I got bored at the beginning。 But then it started getting interesting when it's almost half way to the book。 I kept asking myself how the author will intertwine these characters - hell and living。There were a lot of hints of the plot twist if you take note of the details and somehow I already knew what will happen。I wish the ending was more detailed or explained as I somewhat got lost and confused that I had to reread it so I can fully grasped what happened。 。。。more

This book was so fun and so unique, and I don't think I've read anything quite like this! It's so fun to follow a protagonist who works in Hell and is trying to get a promotion by having people sell their souls to him。 I love how we not only get his POV, but we also follow the POV of the family who's souls he is trying to take。 It was such an original story, and I am such a sucker for the trope of something that is not exactly human mocking humanity and making fun of humanity's strange behavior, This book was so fun and so unique, and I don't think I've read anything quite like this! I also thought the ending was so unexpected and so clever! The only reason this didn't get five stars from me is because of Calamity, her character just didn't feel needed in this story and her storyline in general kind of bored me, I found myself skimming her sections to get back to the Harrisons and their drama lol。 But this is a really solid debut and I'd highly recommend! Can't wait to see what this author writes in the future。 。。。more

Wow what a disappointment。 I LOVED this book in the beginning。 The concept was incredible, the depiction of hell so vivid, and the family dynamic fascinating。 The last 100 pages were so painful to read though。 Too much bouncing between storylines to keep track, so many irrelevant details and the coup de grace, a disappointing ending。 The resolution made no sense。 I was ready to give this book 5 stars half way through, then 4 before the final 100 pages but the ending left me dissatisfied。 Ready f Wow what a disappointment。 I LOVED this book in the beginning。 The concept was incredible, the depiction of hell so vivid, and the family dynamic fascinating。 The last 100 pages were so painful to read though。 Too much bouncing between storylines to keep track, so many irrelevant details and the coup de grace, a disappointing ending。 The resolution made no sense。 I was ready to give this book 5 stars half way through, then 4 before the final 100 pages but the ending left me dissatisfied。 Ready for my next book。 。。。more

Um…what?I just finished and am still wondering what I read。 I’m confused。 I’m left wanting。 I’m asking myself why—why did I read this book?Perhaps there will be some kind of higher epiphany after I ponder it longer, but right now I’m just kind of…meh。We have a few storylines: Cal and Pey in Hell, which kudos to Lux, the concept was original and creative; then the Harrisons and all their secretive history; the Cal’s backstory; then Pey’s own unclear history somehow related, literally, to the Harr Um…what?I just finished and am still wondering what I read。 I’m confused。 I’m left wanting。 I’m asking myself why—why did I read this book?Perhaps there will be some kind of higher epiphany after I ponder it longer, but right now I’m just kind of…meh。We have a few storylines: Cal and Pey in Hell, which kudos to Lux, the concept was original and creative; then the Harrisons and all their secretive history; the Cal’s backstory; then Pey’s own unclear history somehow related, literally, to the Harrisons。 And it just fell a bit flat for me。I’m sure I’m supposed to be left with feelings of good versus evil, love prevailing (after all, Pey ultimately made the same choice after escaping Hell—to trade his soul for his daughter’s life), family ties and all that, but it didn’t come together like I had hoped。And what was up with all the mentions of “millennia” and “eons”?! They both lived in the early part of the 20th century, so at best, they had been in Hell for a few decades! The timing of the backstories really misaligned。3* for one that I’m left shaking my head over! 。。。more

Wow! What a book…。 My head is going to be spinning about this one for a long time… such a cool concept and idea, with the caveat that humanity shines through。 MUAH。 And the two interconnected stories! And the characters! Could go without the dad creepin on the teenager but oh well :)。。。Borrowed!

I enjoyed this book so much! The multiple perspectives, the pace of the book, the overall storyline were all great! So many characters that were well fleshed out so you care about each, despite their shortcomings。 I thought this was a very good book that had twists I didn’t wholly expect that could keep me on the edge of my seat。 Great debut!!

Great promise but not a 5 star book。 The story of Hell had so much potential and parts of it were darkly amusing。 The constant damp rugs, pens that never work, stale air ‘that smells like old soup’, horrible Jager, nobody is honest…it’s so much promise。 For me, the story fell apart with Cal。 I just didn’t understand what was happening with her back story。 Were the boys her dad’s recruits? Or football players? I don’t know。 I was so confused that it was distracting and I had to go back and reread Great promise but not a 5 star book。 The story of Hell had so much potential and parts of it were darkly amusing。 The constant damp rugs, pens that never work, stale air ‘that smells like old soup’, horrible Jager, nobody is honest…it’s so much promise。 For me, the story fell apart with Cal。 I just didn’t understand what was happening with her back story。 Were the boys her dad’s recruits? The parts when Peyote described a specific part of Hell was fascinating。 But then we would get more of Cal’s back story and you were left wondering how it’s supposed to move everything along。 All in all an entertaining read with potential to be great。 。。。more

3。75 stars! Really enjoyed the audible narration on this one! I find it hard to find narrators I like but the man and woman were both fantastic。 The story started off so strong and I was hooked。 It dropped for a me in the middle and started veering off course into a weird plot area, but all in all, it was a fun concept!

Took one star away for the confusion in a lot of the book but I really enjoyed the storyline。 So nice to read something more imaginative。

I really liked this book! It was very unique and fun! It was fast-paced, despite it being a 400 page book。 Which has been an issue for me lately。 (why does it seem that EVERY book is a min of 325 pages! They should pay more to edit the junky parts out than by page numbers!!!)I was confused with one thing and that was the identity of Pey。 SO I'm going to read through the comments on that one。 If you read more than 25 pages, I'm not spoiling anything :D I really liked this book! 3。75 stars。 This was an interesting concept; it was essentially two storylines in one book。 I found myself being more drawn in to Pey's storyline, than the storyline of the Harrisons even though technically the stories are combined。As I read this, I found myself shaking my head at Lily because I couldn't possibly understand why she thought it was a good idea to do what she did, I mean, I have a big brother and if something like what happened to Sarah, happened to me, best believe he is going to 3。75 stars。 This was an interesting concept; it was essentially two storylines in one book。 I found myself being more drawn in to Pey's storyline, than the storyline of the Harrisons even though technically the stories are combined。As I read this, I found myself shaking my head at Lily because I couldn't possibly understand why she thought it was a good idea to do what she did, I mean, I have a big brother and if something like what happened to Sarah, happened to me, best believe he is going to do whatever he can to avenge me。 I didn't know what Gavin was going to do, but I knew he was planning something, I didn't foresee Ruth though, so that was a good twist。I wanted a different ending for Pey, I am not saying that he didn't make the right choice, I just was hoping it didn't turn out the exact same way, that was a bummer。All in all, an entertaining read。 。。。more
